Here’s the best way to understand how domain works. Imagine that the internet is the directory index in a building. If you want anyone to visit or find where you live, you’ll be dependent on that index where your address is seen. Just as if you’re going to visit your website, you need a website address. Now that is your domain name.
Several terms are related to domains, including domain name, uniform resource locator ( URL), web address. You can use these terms interchangeably. After all, they all mean the same.
There’s a string of numbers that makes up your website known as an IP address. So instead of requiring your visitors to remember these numbers, the best way to visit you is through your domain name. This shortcut is all thanks to what is known as the domain name system (DNS).
DNS is a group of computers that translates your domain name into your numerical IP address. An amazing fact is that all computers communicate via numbers and not words. TLD stands for top-level domain. The extension or portion of a domain name follows the dot (or period). Most common TLDs include .com, .net, .biz, .info, and .org. These TLDs stand for something relevant like .com means “commercial” while .net means .net.
There is a hyper-specific TLD known as ccTLD or country code top-level domain. This is designed to signify sites located or associated with a particular country or territory.
