Since July 2018, Google started flagging websites that do not enforce SSL, and websites that do not have it now have a warning on Google Chrome that the user is about to enter an “unsafe” site.

So if you’re a website owner and your site does not have SSL, your site is likely going to be flagged as “unsafe.”

So, let’s circle back and discuss first – what is an SSL and why should you have it?

“SSL” stands for “Secure Sockets Layer.” It is the web-standard technology for ensuring that the internet connection is secure. It protects the data being transferred between two points across the internet from being read by a third party.

It encrypts the data between a website and a client, such as a browser or an app, as well as data being transferred between servers.

What is an SSL Certificate?

A Secure Sockets Layer or SSL certificate, by its name, provides additional security to your website whenever it is accessed by your visitors. It authenticates your website every time it is opened in a browser, and it protects the information that your visitor provides, so the connection between you and your client is private.

When your website acquires information from your clients, such as names, addresses, and payment information, an SSL certificate assures that no third party can access them, to keep your clients secure.

Types of SSL Certificates

 1. Free SSL

cPanel offers FreeSSL, which you can use for 3 months*. When the 3-month period is about to expire, cPanel will prompt Domain Verification to provide you with a new SSL certificate. This new certificate will also be free for you to use for another 3 months.

FreeSSL allows you to manage your website more, without worrying about acquiring SSL certificates from a third party. Yet, acquiring a paid SSL has its perks, too.

 2. Paid SSL
